The Sagrada Familia ( Sacred Family ) in Barcelona is like London's Big Ben or the Eiffel Tower in Paris. One of the most emblamatic locations in Catalonia. It is the most ambitious work of art by Antonio Gaudi, a master piece that started it's construction more than a century ago, an is still unfinished. Nature's facade, the facade of passion, the snail winding stairs, the needles, boardroom and the Crypt Museum, the Apse...all of these parts of the Sagrada Familia culminate to make this a masterpiece. Between Guadi and other architects and sculptures have continued to build and add to this unfinished work of art that Guadi's deat in 1926 left begind as part of his legacy.
The first stone in the emblamatic building was set in 1882. Francisco de Paula was the chosen architect, but he refused the offer and the chance was given to a young Antonio Gaudi, in the yeawr 1883. The first phase was the Crypt, which was finished by 1889, after that it was the facade finished in 1904 and in 1925 one of the bell towers was built. 1926 was the darkest year with the accident that caused Guadi's death. To this sad year followed the Spanish Civil War, which paralized the work of art. In 1987, Jose Maria subirachs took the reigns of this masterpiece and still continues to add to this beautiful sight.
The Sagrada Familia is estimated to be finished in the year 2030. |
